Nylon wire, also known as thermoplastic high heat-resistant nylon coated wire or THHN wire, is a common wire used to connect branch circuits and electrical appliances. It is also known by its pair name as THWN (or THWN-2). This thermoplastic heat-resistant waterproof nylon-coated wire is designed to operate in the same environment as THHN, and can still be used in harsher environments when laying without adding other components. THWN is considered an evolution of THHN, so both are still widely used by construction workers.
Water resistance is one of the main reasons for using THWN wire. These wires run in wet environments and still do not require conduit; this flexibility makes them the wire of choice for construction contractors, as neither wire type needs to carry conduit in wet environments. Because THWN wire has a separate PVC sheath, unlike wires with only one layer of PVC insulation, the PVC sheath can help waterproof.
THHN wires are the original version of the nylon sheath. Wire designed to withstand use in high temperature environments up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit, this resistance drops to 167 degrees in the event of oil exposure. THHN wire is usually two-conductor and can be found in the familiar American wiring used to connect all homes and other structures. For underground and conduit-free installations, UL83 certified thhn wire should be chosen.
It can be known from the above that THWN wires are quite an evolution of THHN wires, so the two are very similar. Although there are many similarities and most of them are the same in use, there are still small differences. I can have here The difference between two points is that the conductor has a different size, and the other is the difference in the heat resistance of the sheath, because the heat resistance of the thwn sheath is slightly lower than that of the thhn wire.
THHN and THWN wires are usually the same voltage rating; in most environments where both wires are used, there will be very little difference between the two. As a result, most wire manufacturers decided to make them into one product. Both offer the same range of specifications, available in solid and stranded versions, and rated at 750 volts. But this is wrong, because the heat resistance of these two types of sheaths is still a little different. In order to cope with different environments and make nylon wires last longer, the distinction between thhn, thwn and thwn-2 in nylon wires is still very necessary.
