One aspect of home wiring that cable inspectors will pay close attention to is that non-metallic cables should not be used in exposed cable locations. Common exposed locations should be at the face and end of columns and joists in basement foundation walls or unfinished framed spaces.

The National Cable Code, which is the basis for all local building codes, has specific provisions for the installation of cables to protect them from damage.

The correct use of XSD Cables

1. XSD RVV cable, also known as RVV cable, in round form is the most common form of cable used in residential electrical work.

2. XSD cable is a bundle of individual conductors wrapped in a plastic vinyl outer sheath. Typically, the cable comes with 10, 12 or 14 gauge conductors for individual residential power transmission.

3. The sheath on XSD Cables does provide some protection against accidental physical damage. The protective sheath is made of tough polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermoplastic, and is 15 mils thick on both 14 and 12 AWG cable. Nevertheless, no matter how rugged the Kensington rvv cable jacket is, it is not suitable for exposed applications.

4. The inner cavity is covered with a finished wall surface that the cable will not be able to reach.

5. Within the cavity of a masonry or tiled wall, but only in dry places: the wall must not be wet or damp.

6. Between exposed joists or columns, if the cable is recessed away from the surface of the framing members. This is usually done by drilling a hole in the centre of the framing member and passing the cable through the hole.

Inappropriate exposure of XSD RVV cables

The National Electrical Code does not prohibit the use of RVV cable in situations where physical damage may occur; however, one example of this is where electricians have attached RVV cable to the front of a column or ceiling joist, or to the surface of a concrete foundation wall. Although RVV cable is allowed to pass through a drilled hole in the centre of an exposed framing member, it cannot be attached to the front of a stud, as this could cause the cable to be hooked or damaged.

Similarly, RVV cable attached to the surface of a concrete wall is prone to damage and is therefore not permitted.

Wiring in exposed locations

An approved method of wiring exposed surfaces is to install an approved rigid conduit in a framing member or wall and then lay individual rvv cables inside the conduit. Such wiring provides excellent protection against physical damage.

Can RVV cable be run in conduit?

If the electrical inspector marks the laying path as not conforming to RVV cable, you may want to install conduit and then re-use the same RVV cable by running it through the new conduit.

This is a subject of debate among electricians. Some professionals believe that RVV cable in conduit may tend to build up heat and is therefore not allowed. Others take a more lenient view. Although the National Electrical Code does not explicitly prohibit the insertion of RVV cable into conduit, in practice it is difficult to do and few professional electricians will undertake such installations.

Well, the above is about "XSD Cable specification exposure position and engineering practice and rvv cable correct use" is introduced, hope it can help you! It is recommended to continue to pay attention to XSD Cable, to learn more information.
